DVD-RW install issues

I'm not sure if this message was posted once before. I apologize if it
was.

I purchased a Lite-On DVD-RW at Wal-Mart (not sure what model). I only
have room for 2 CD/DVD drives and had a CD-RW and a CD-ROM drive
installed. I removed the CD-ROM drive and installed the DVD-RW in its
place, but it won't work. I then uninstalled the driver for the CD-ROM
drive hoping Windows would install the new drivers, but it didn't. It
only lists the CD-RW in the Device Manager.

To make a long story short, I currently have the DVD-RW jumpered as the
master and the CD-RW jumpered as the slave. The data transfer tape is
labeled "Master" and "Slave", and is installed appropriately. However,
it doesn't recognize the DVD-RW. It recognizes the CD-RW just fine.
What should I do? Please help. TIA.

WinME, 160GB HD installed into controller card, 256 & 128 MB RAM
sticks, 64MB Video card.

CD-RW & DVD-RW are on one data transfer tape (going to the
motherboard), and the floppy drive and hard drive are on the other
(going to the primary slot on the controller card).

BTW, it hangs at the manufacturer's splash screen and the Windows
splash screen for about 1.5 minutes each.

Sounds like you're using an 80 core IDE cable that supports cable select
which is basically a wire cut on one of the pins. They're colour coded
for a reason.

I'll bet that you have the DVDRW plugged into the grey (slave) socket
and the CDRW plugged into the black (master) socket.

Either swap the sockets over or change the jumper settings on the drives
to CS or swap which one is slave and master.

The cable isn't color-coded there, but it is on the motherboard. I
tried cable select with no noticable difference. I manually told the
BIOS that there are two CD-ROM drives (the closest available option).

The DVD-RW is jumpered as the Master, and the slot on the cable labeled
"Master" is hooked up into it. The CD-RW is jumpered as the Slave and
the slot on the cable labeled "Slave" is hooked up into it.

The cable that was going into the hard drive is free, since the hard
drive is directly connected to the controller card. I tried connecting
that cable into the "IDE2" slot on the controller card with no
noticable change. Now it's DVD -> CD -> MB. The MB connection looks
different than the IDE2 slot, so I don't know if I can do DVD -> CD ->
Controller card.

Might be colour-coded.

What is the problem?
