i have a movie file from my sony digital camera taken in "portrait"
(sideways) style

my camera will change the orientiation of photos themeslves, but is there a
way to turn the video 90 degrees?

Bummer...I did that too...so far, no luck. Fortunately, I can turn the
laptop on it's side <g>!
