With Win98 I could create my own startup and shutdown logos
from pictures I chose. As I recall, I chose a .bmp file,
added my text then resized them horizontally (I forget the
size) and saved them to a file called, something like,
logo.bmp.
Is this the same for XP?
If so what are files called, where are they stored and what
are the dimensions?

not that simple anymore, you now need to get a program that will do it for
you, like style xp
