SP2 and NAV 2004

I am having a problem with NAV 2004 since installing XP SP1.

Because of the slowness of this product, I often have to disable it,
to do certain things (some games, burn DVD's)

But since I installed SP2 a message pops up intemittantly stating my
virus protection is off!

This is merely bothersome in some instances, but when playing a
shooter that doesn't allow for task switching, this popup, which
forces itself to the foreground, is the "kiss of death" and the system
generally hangs.

Anyone know how to turn this off; I disabled everything in Windows
Security Center, but this is a message being generated by Norton
Antivirus.

Thanks

I have a couple of questions.

Did you mean Service Pack 2? If so, is the message saying that you are
potentially vulnerable? That can be disabled.

If you are talking about a message that slowly rises from the lower right
side of the screen, stays up a few seconds, I don't know. I have seen it
several times on different computers and it says that Norton real time
protection is disabled, but if you look at Norton, it shows no problems. I
have always wondered if this message is really part of Norton AV.

You can disable the warnings about your AV program. Start, Control
Panel, Security Center, Virus Protection

Then you have to click on Recommendations, which is brain-dead, to get
to the screen where you tell it you already have one and not to bother
you with theirs.

Then, on the left side of the Security Center, do Change the way
Security Center alerts me - change it to not bother you. At this point,
you should be pretty much done. Also take down the firewall - if you
didn't need their firewall before, you don't need it now.

No this message is a full blown popup, that says "Security Alert" at
the top. Below that it is Yellow this the Symantec name and logo, and
says:

Your comupter is at risk in the following areas:

-Virus protection is turned off

Open Your Norton product to resolve these issues.

Then it has a check box (which is checked) that says:

Do not share Norton securtiy status with other products. (Recommended)

I have all the security stuff that SP2 installs turned off.

That is run of the reason I disable Norton, when running a database
program.....it keeps scanning the database everytime it is accessed,
and stops the system for 2 ot 5 seconds.

I have already done what you have suggested; this security alert
message is not being generated by XP's Security System, but by the
antivirus program itself!

Kosher I don't know, but that alert is a persistent one, it also comes
on when you don't have a firewall running; but this is how I stopped
it. (and I forgot what the names of the files were).

Run the task manager there is a file running that starts with a W
This is the program that watches your system and starts another
program (alerter?) you will see when the alert pops up I think it
starts with an A. You can play with it to make sure, if you stop the
alerter task it just keeps coming back.

You need to stop the watcher and rename it (I deleted it) then rename
the alerter for good measure.

You can always get the file name and search the registry file or
whatever, I just found this faster.

I just don't have a pop up telling me something I already know
anymore.

I forgot to mention this is a "Protected" file and XP's going to want
to install it again stand firm just say no

Actually all you need to do is run Symantec's Liveupdate feature to
get the latest updates and patches for NAV2004. They have a patch
that resolves the issue you are talking about. I ran into the same
thing on a few of my computers, but once I did the Liveupdate I don't
get the prompt anymore. They had to patch NAV2004 in order to work
properly with WinXP SP2.

I took their advice and closed down my AVG and ZoneAlarm before
installing SP2, when I was through XP didn't catch on that I was
running a firewall - it was missing it.

I had to disable the alert due to false alarms. Thought this was the
case as well.
