Home Network problems - bad card? IP issues? novice needs help

I'm writing from work so forgive if specifics are lacking but please
advise if they are relevant.

My home computer is acting up. We run XP with Sympatico high speed
using a Speedstream 5200 on a linksys wireless router. (we have
another computer upstairs for email and internet only). I had been
using a Static IP (192.168.2.2 I think).

The system worked pretty well but we were having some problems with
connection loss about once a day (this required a manual reboot of the
modem downstairs). A firmware fix was provided to the modem which I
ran. In the process of updating the firmware, I put the modem in
bridge mode,whatever that is? I could not however connect to the
internet and Bell's set up disk could not find the modem. Bell
support went through a bunch of stuff with me but eventually
instructed me on creating a PPPoE connection which was different than
we were used. I changed my router to be PPPoE as well but my wireless
Internet connection wouldn't work. (I suspect its because I needed to
redo my connection methods upstairs but before that I started having
other problems, or maybe created other problems, I don't know.)

I eventually figured out how to reset my modem and eventually even the
Bell set up disk worked (if connected directly to the computer) and
was able to read the modem, install properly and connect to the
Internet like we were used to. However, I could not access my
router's set up to reset to Static IP http://192/.168.1.1.

The other problem I noticed is that when I rebooted and if I had
anything (router or modem) plugged into my ethernet card, the reboot
took several minutes. If nothing is plugged in it loads normally.
I could see my Norton antivirus autoprotect would not enable for
several minutes on reboot which triggerred me to a problem. If I
tried to go into a program, everything froze for several minutes.
Eventually, everything does load but this is unusual.

I've tried uninstalling all my cards, resetting the LAN Automatically
find IP addresses and tried ipconfig/all but was getting nothing that
matched anything that I was supposed to be be seeing. I eventually
tried pinging (whatever that is) and finally I got an IP number which
gave access to my router. (I don't no what the magical combination
was.)

Whether its meaningful or not, but when I try to prescribe an IP in my
LAN connection like 192.168.1.1 it tells me that IP is in use by some
other LAN connection which is hidden. I don't have any other LAN
connections that I am aware, let alone that show this number. If I
hit repair on the LAN it tells me it can't.

Anyway, I reset my router back to the static IP I was using before the
original problem and checked upstairs and all the connections were
good. Wireless and router appeared to be in full cooperation. (I
can see in my router that my upstairs computer is linking.)

Thinking I was out of the woods and hooked the modem back to the
router but no go. The system still rebooted very slowly. Once booted
I could no longer access my router. I tried all the ipconfig and
pinging but nothing. (When I ipconfig. it looks like it is not
finding any IP address all 00.) I tried all the IP numbers I had seen
previously, like 192.168.1.100, but nothing.

If I plug in my internet directly to the computer, I can still get on
the internet. I am really at a loss. The only software update was to
the modem and yet even if I don't put it in the mix i.e. only plug in
my router I still have the start up problems. My wife uses the
computer for work so each morning, I set it up for her but the
networking loss and reboot is a problem. She has also reported that
her photoshop is freezing where it never had before.

At my wits end, I really don't want to ship my whole little network
off to the shop for evaluation. I am at a loss with all these IP
things. I checked with linksys about not being able to read my router
set up and they suggested it might be a bad card but suggested I call
back when I am at the computer for diagnosis.

Could a card be bad and still allow me to access the internet?

I have set up a little troubleshooting check list I intend to go down
tonight. If you could add, delete or alter the order of review to
help me out I would be indebted. I've already spent two nights on
this.


1. Restore XP to a previous state Aug. 14th (if possible, as this was
the last day everything worked fine except for the initial connection
loss problem)
2. Install new card (I have one from my old computer which was used
for about a month and worked fine) and remove current one
retry with modem - slow reboot?
3. update driver for new card
retry with modem - slow reboot?
4. reinstall old/current card
retry with modem - slow reboot?
5. update driver in old/current card
retry with modem - slow reboot?
6. make note of all LAN settings for all connections and remove all
connections. (There are three now. one that Bell had me set up the
other day, the one that I plug into and another one which I have no
idea what it does. it reads something 1324(might not be the actual
number) Connection)
7. reboot
8. retry modem - slow?
9 reinstall sympatico
reboot - slow?
10. reinstall router
reboot - slow?
can I access my router??

If at this point, I am not at least able to read my router, I think I
will admit defeat unless you have other ideas.

i found your explanation detailed (which is good) but all over the map so i
am just going to offer some basic networking steps for you to try from
beginning to end. i am sure others will have some good (prob better) advice
as well. could it be a bad nic or some of your other thoughts?? sure but
lets find out for sure.

assuming this is your setup.....

from wall -->ISP modem --> router --> computer(s)

it is probably also a good idea to turn off all firewalls/ antivirus (except
the firewall in the router) before you begin. dont forget to turn them back
on. unless you really know what you are doing, starting a troubleshooting
process anywhere but from the beginning usually will cause nothing but
problems. your troubleshooting should go in the same sequence as your path
(above) so lets start with the ISP modem. (**read all steps b4 you begin).

1. unplug everything except your modem to the wall. are the internet
lights coming on as they should?? green lights for 'online' and ''inbound'
& 'outbound' traffic (or whatever lights on your particualr modem). if so
goto step 2.

2. plug the router into your modem and reset and reboot. does it appear to
be functioning properly?? check the manufacturers's website (or your
manuals) before you disconnect everything**)

3. plug either computer into the router. be sure it is on the same subnet
as your router (ie: if your router IP is 192.168.1.1, then your computer
should be between 192.168.1.2 & 192.168.1.254. The subnet mask should also
be the same...prob 255.255.255.0)

4. plug the second computer into the router and be sure again it is on the
same subnet (192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254.....all three devices must have
their own IP and cannot be identical), with identical subnet masks
(255.255.255.0). It is also important that the two computer are on the same
workgroup. right click 'my computer', 'computer name' tab, and 'change'
button (assuming you are using winXP on both).

5. try start/run/cmd to bring up the DOS window and ping each device from
both computers.

*it is important that you make note of any issues as you do each step so if
there are problems down the road you might know if they are related.

Thanks for the ideas D. I tried everything and finally just reloaded
XP and set up a PPPoE connection with my ISP. Changed my router
setting to PPPoE and voila no more problems. Start up is fast. Very
happy after two days of frustration.
