Default Outlook Express local folders

Anyone know how to back up a whole local folder (Not the default ones, but
one I've created) with all its messages to a disk?

TIA

Chloe

Open Outlook Express

The 'Store Flolder' button will show you where the OE mail folders are.

NO - The Export function in Outlook Express ONLY exports to either Outlook
or Exchange - it does NOTHING else.

Download Genie Backup Manager from Genie-Soft www.genie-soft.com. The
current version for Windows 98/Me is 4.0. It is $40. This version also
supports 2000/XP. The current version for Windows 2000/XP is 5.0. It costs
$65.

This is a shareware utility, but it works great! It's worth every penny.

Not only can you backup Outlook Express emails, but you can also back up
the following for your MAIN IDENTITY.

Outlook Express Root
----------------------
Local Folders
Newsgroups

Outlook Express Data
----------------------
Outlook Express Accounts
Outlook Express Rules
Block Senders
Preferences
Signatures

In addition to Outlook Express data, you can also back up these things with
Genie Backup Manager:

Outlook Data (2000/2002/2003)
MSN 8
Eudora E-mail
Windows Registry
Windows Favorites
Internet Explorer settings
Windows settings
Windows Desktop
Windows Address Book
Windows Fonts
My Folders
My Programs

My Folders
-----------
My Computer (choose any folder on your PC)
My Network Places
My Recycle Bin

My Programs (limited to certain programs)
-------------
WinZip
Adobe Acrobat Reader
Genie Backup Manager Jobs
(there are more programs it can back up, just ones I don't have, like
Adobe Photoshop 7 settings)

If $40 is too much, you can also check out their Outlook Express Backup
6.5. It costs $30. There are other freeware/shareware utilities out there,
but none of them are as good as Genie-Soft.

One tip, though, for using this software to back up Outlook Express (and
probably Outlook).

Custom folders save best when they are located as subfolders under INBOX or
SENT ITEMS.

Example:

Outlook Express
__ Local Folders
____Inbox
_______Acct
_______eBay
_______Personal
_______Groups
_______Forums
____Outbox
____Sent Items
_______Mom
_______Groups
____Deleted Items
____Drafts
____Calendar
____Journal
____Notes
____Tasks

Please note that I have used the underscore because this will preserve the
"nested" spacing. If I just use spaces, they may not "nest" properly when
sent to the newsgroup. Sometimes messages sent to a newsgroup (and regular
emails) automatically Left Justify each line of text, whether you want them
to or not. With the underscore, the proper format (and my intention) is
preserved.

If you have only a few custom folders, though, they will back up if you put
them in the root directory under LOCAL FOLDERS, but if you have several
emails in custom folders and subfolders, this will hang up the program. I
know, because my Outlook Express store folder used to be in excess of
400MB!

This hang up will not occur if the custom folders are in the INBOX
directory. You can also create a similar hierarchy under SENT ITEMS.

There are some limitations to this method.

They are stored as folder name.dbx so I guess you could search for them and
save copies.

You're quite correct, my bad.

I apologise.

"There are some limitations to this method."

OK, criticism accepted because I did not explain 'how' to back them up.

So

Having found the location (via the above method) of the OE folders you wish
to 'back up':

Open a backup utility and or file management tool, and 'back up' said
folders to a sutable location or media.

Examples of 'Backup' utilities and file management tools include:

Microsoft 'Backup'
Windows Explorer
A 'plethora' of similar tools can be found by using 'Google'
Other posts have mentioned specialised OE backup tools.

Suitable locations or media' include

Alternative disk / folder
CDR/RW / DVDR/RW
Tape drive
Flash drive
etc

Cheers
Paul
