What is causing this HELL???

Hi...

I am running to the ng to find out if anyone can help me out with yet
another problem.

About a week ago, I started having trouble with IE and Outlook. I would
lose my internet connection, and outlook could not reach my server. I
released and renewed my ip, and it would temporary solve the internet
connectivity issue, but I still couldn't download email from the comcast
server. I tried reseting my router, recycling my cable modem, and did
different things like shut down my software firewall. None of these things
are new to my system, so I doubt they were the trouble.

I tried to uninstall OE and IE, and then reinstall, but the new downloaded
versions I had wouldn't install over what I had already.

So I reinstalled windows (I didn't write 0s to the drive or anything, so all
files remained in tact). I'm running XP Pro.

Well, needless to say, it didn't solve my connectivity issue at all,
although OE now works (as long as I maintain a net connection). If I
release and renew, everything comes back up, fine and dandy.

Oh, one other thing it's been doing all along since this problem started.
My system totally freezes. My mouse freezes and if I'm doing something, the
program freezes. I can barely get the mouse or anything to allow me to
reboot. It'll freeze then come to in a minute, only to freeze right up
again as soon as I move the mouse.

The one thing that I noticed, and it could be nothing, is that when I go to
the cmd prompt to do a release/renew, if I do an ipconfig /all ... I'm
seeing my router and node IP address shown as hexidecimals, with an extra ::
thrown in here and there, and it has a % towards the end. In other words,
something like fe80::4c0:7fff:fe4d:d5de%5 shows up where my IP address used
to show up as a normal IP address. I also see a listing there for a tunnel
adapter pseudo-interface, which I can't recall seeing before (but maybe just
didnt' notice).

Any ideas???

Thanks!

Linda

Hi Linda
I don't have any good experiences by doing what you have done with your
xp installation and reinstall over the old system. From start it sounds
like you caught something and did the wrong things to solve it.I should
recommend you to format your c drive and make a new fresh install with xp
it's a great system if you get it right from the beginning.Make sure you
stay unconnected until you get your firewall and virusprogsin place to
avoid you get one of them evil things thats keep the net a dangerous
place to be without protection. Then get them updates from windows update
that protect you from getting something .it's about 40-50 mb and as I
said dont let your firewall let anything in that you haven't ordered.
At last I would recommend you to use Mozilla for the net and for mail.It
got more security than IE and outlook express and I just love some of the
functions it got.
I hope this will be a help to you
regards al

Forgot to say that you should install spyboot when you are done. It's a

Hi Allan,

I use F-Protect anti-virus and McAfee firewall in addition to my hardware
router/firewall.

I run Pest Patrol, Spy Sweeper, SpyBot Search and Destroy in addition to
Pop-Up Cop, Ad-Aware Pro, and PC Bug Doctor. I run them habitually.

I suppose I could have a virus, or maybe something else is wrong? I dunno.

Thanks for your help!

I run a firewall.

Life is good.

Comcast was having problems last night, according to the "Network Health"

Dump IE and switch to Netscape or Opera. Instead of Outlook, use Act! or
Lotus Organizer.

IE+OL have caused more hartaches to users than there is room in this NG
server to document.

URL Parsing Bug in IE Invites Phishing Attacks
By Larry Seltzer June 11 2004

A bug in fully patched versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web
browser allows violations of the browser's security zones, with the
result that an unknown malicious site could assume the privileges of
more trusted zones.

Researchers on several security mailing lists have been discussing the
bug since yesterday and appear still to be learning about it.

The same vulnerability could be used for phishing attacks, in which the
URL in the address bar appears to be for one site but is in fact a link
to a different site. Both of these problems rely on certain
misconfigurations of the DNS and Web server on the malicious Web site ...

Hi...

Yeah, I agree, OE and IE are irritating to say the least, and I'll most
likely switch if I have to redo this pc. And I don't think I'm having
problems with the 'bug' that you gave link to. I think there is something
wrong in my network settings, or at least I'd like to rule that out since
I'm so careful about such stuff. But doesn't everyone think they are? HA!
The way the internet is today, I don't think anyone, no matter how
technically savvy they are, can be bug free.
