That depends what you mean by fast. If you need processing power
to create multimedia files or other type activity then you should
get a Pentium. For listening and watching video, web browsing
and email then it should work fine. Don't use it as a game
machine.

The Centrino processor is built on the Pentium Mobile processor, adding
functionality for wifi using Intel's chipset and wireless technology.
Basically, I'd guess that a 1.6g Centrino is the same speed as a Pentium 4
1.6g, but with wireless capabilities.

The Pentium M has an L2 cache of 1 meg so it out performs P4's of the same
speed.

I knew that - but I didn't remember what the P4 had at that speed. At some
point, didn't they increase the P4's cache to 1mb? And the faster Pentium M
CPUs have a 2mb cache, I think...but then, my memory is getting shorter than
my...um, nose <bg> (I can't keep up with all these different P4/PM
configurations...sometimes I think Intel can't either!)

There's no such thing as a "Centrino" processor. The processor is a
Pentium-M. The chipset is "Centrino". You can get a Pentium-M without a
Centrino chipset but you can't get a Centrino chipset without a Pentium-M.

Is the Pentium-M a "fast" processor? Well, it ain't slow. The Pentium-M is
an extension and outgrowth of the P-III architecture and is clock for clock
"faster" than a P4 at the same clock speed. A 1.6 GHz P-M will be in the
same class as a 2 GHz (or maybe a little higher) P4M. The reason is that the
P-M, like the AMD Athlon and the older Intel P-III, does more "work" by
processing more instructions for each tick of the processor clock when
compared to the P4. Intel threw shite all over this argument when AMD was
making it in marketing the Athlon. Now Intel embraces it.

If I were purchasing an Intel based laptop it would be one based on the
Pentium-M (but not necessarily Centrino.)

You'd be entirely wrong, it's at least as fast as a 2.4ghz P4.

You think you are confused now wait until all the Intel cpu's have new names
that have nothing to do with their speed.

I think you are right on the newer ones having larger cache. In any case
most would agree a Pentium would perform about as well as a P4 with 1000
more speed. Kinda like the way AMD has marketed their chips for the last
few years.

Isn't this all just a way to confuse the consumer into not knowing exactly
what they're buying? Names, numbers, hiding behind marketing
techniques...but then, I haven't any alternatives for them to use either.
