Some drivers using MS-DOS compatibility questions

Running Win98se with an Athlon processor.

Noticed in System Performance :

File System: some drivers are using MS-DOS compatibility

Virtual Memory: MS_DOS compatibility mode

Windows could not identify a driver or program and has switched to
MS-DOS compatibility

Windows was unable to identify a real mode driver or memory resident
program loaded in your Config system or autoexec.bat file

My questions:

Is this slowing down performace significantly?
Why has this change occured?
What steps can I take to remedy this condition?

Thanks for any help

Frank

It sounds like you are in safe mode. On the desktop, is safemode listed in
all four corners of the display?
