I'm having trouble replacing a dll file while using windows xp, so I want to
try it thru dos, maybe it will work that way. Does anyone know how I can restart in MS-DOS mode? I have the set of 6 xp boot disks, but isnt that to be used only when installing xp? Thanks in advance - Daniel |

You can't start in real DOS, but you can start
in Safe Mode Command Prompt. Press the F8 key at startup and select it from the menu. Of course, if your file system is FAT32, you could use a Windows 98 bootup floppy. I tried safe mode with command prompt and when I tried overwriting the dll
file, it said it was in use. Then I tried formatting a floppy disk and making it boot ms-dos, but that way it wasnt recognising c: drive. It's STILL in use? Did you choose SAFE MODE
with Command Prompt? What is the name of the file that you need to restore? Yep, I chose Safe Mode with Command Prompt, my resolution was even 640x480
and it had Safe mode written in the corners with the command prompt window open. I'm trying to replace the file "ole32.dll" cos my programs keep crashing and in the error report window, the error always has that dll file name in it. Yes NTFS can be a pain.
but before you go any further I suggest you make a copy of the DLL you are trying to replace to a floppy and rename it. Then put the new copy of the dll on the floppy. Boot to Dos from a 98boot disc then use file compare and see if there are any differences between the 2 files. I suggest this because usually often the error from a DLL is because the DLL is being incorrectly called rather than being corrupted, so that when you do finally manage to replace it the problem does not go away. Best of luck. They can be a pig to sort out. When I bought a laptop with XP on it, I removed everything from the hard drive, by removing the partition and set the drive up as FAT32 and installed XP etc. back on the machine. The laptop works well, but I know if I get a problem then I can work on the drive from a DOS boot disk.
