I am using Windows 98 and I cannot copy a 3.99 gig .avi file from my hard
drive to a DVD. Usually, I do not have any problems in backing up files on my hard drive to DVDs, but for several avi files ex my camcorder, I am getting the message "The parameter is incorrect". I have tried renaming the files but this did not work. Can anyone help me with this problem please. Thanks a lot. Joanne |

That's correct, but are you saying that under Windows 98 you cannot copy a file that is larger than 2 GBytes? Joanne |

I first came across it with M$Backup which would happliy let you create a backup file >2Gbyte but wouldn't open it for restore. I was a very happy bunny at the time... A dim corner of my mind thinks it is maybe ANY program that uses old low level routines. This could be what is up with your writer. What to do? well, there are utilities that compress graphics files and there are utilities that can chop them up into chapters. You may also find that some writing software (eg Nero) uses its own drivers and will handle this size file. As I now use XP, I can't test this for you. It is worth a look and I think Nero lets you download a time-limited trial. If that writes ok, then you know the problem is solvable. For all I know, your own writer software may have an update on its web site that will solve the problem. Hope that helps a little. Palindrome |

However if you are using an iso9660 filesystem on your DVD then the maximum file size is 2GB. You need to use udf filesystem instead. But udf isn't supported on Windows 98. Joy |

It seems that, when capturing video from your camcorder, you need to make sure that the file sizes are less than 2GB if you want to back up the files later to DVD using the Win98 operating system. Would all copy programs run into the same 2GB max. file size problem, that is, I have used the copy command in conjunction with the Direct Letter Access (DLA) facility of my DVD burner and done the copying through "My Computer". Some usefull info re file size for digital video:
http://www.ulead.com/learning/video1/page1.htm From features of video studio 7 manual: "Seamless MPEG Capture VideoStudio overcomes the 4GB video file limitation in Windows 98 and Me (also in Windows 2000 and XP, if they are installed in FAT 32 formatted drives), letting you capture MPEG, DV Type-1, and DV Type-2 video files as large as your hard drive will allow." So Videostudio 7 will allow you to capture files greater than 4G if using win98SE and fat32. According to MS avi files 2Gb or over won't play. I experimented ripping a DVD to one large vob file once. It stopped at 4Gb -2 bytes. That would play alright though the latter part of the end credits were cut off. GraB |

Yes, the Windows Media Player, for example, can play a 3.99 Gb file right through without any problems. There must be a way of transferring a 3.99 Gb file from my hard disk to a DVD, it is ridiculous that this causes so much trouble. Why are such limits placed in the operating system? Perhaps I need to take my computer in to a computer repair place to have the job done for me? Joanne Joanne |
