I have a spam in my inbox which shuts down OE whenever I try and delete it.
I think it might br partly a problem due to the preview pane opening the
message before I can delete it. How do I stop the preview pane from reading
this email?

Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).

Click, View - Layout, then deselect Show Preview Pane in the Preview Pane
area at the bottom of the dialog box.

View/Layout/uncheck "Show Preview Pane." And under Tools/Options/Read, make sure
that "Automatically download message when viewing in the Preview Pane" is
unchecked, also. Though it might be too late for that. Have you scanned your
system with a good, up-to-date AV lately?

Disable Active X in your Internet Options.
Boot to Safe Mode.
Delete the message.
Run a full virus scan using updated antivirus software.
Run a full scan for adware and spyware.

Download, install, update, and run the following programs:
Adaware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Spybot Search and Destroy - http://security.kolla.de/
Spyware Blaster - http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareblaster.html

The first two find and root out spyware, adware, hijackers, and dialers.
The third one will protect your system from further infection by such diseases.

Download and run hijackthis from http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/
Post back here with your log file if you do not understand what needs to be removed.

Thanks folks, message now deleted. I have AVG installed and run it
frequently to see if there are any visues'. Nothing has ever turned up. I
find the preview pane is useful as I get about 30 spams a day getting though
the filters, and I want to know what they are before deleting them.

Many of those spams use embedded scripts which, when opened or previewed, verify that your e-mail address is valid.
The result... more spam.

You're welcome. But...

1. You need a better AV.
2. It may be convenient to use the Preview Pane, but it's also a hazard to your
system, and through it, a hazard to other systems as well.

The Preview Pane:

among many others.

If you insist on using AVG, please turn off the outgoing cert - it's
non-compliant, and a PITA.

Hi, I think the outgoing certification should be gone. With the antivirus,
its something I thought about quite a lot and last year had briefly used
Norton antivirus, which was terrible as it slowed down my computer and kept
crashing my word processor. Norton were not helpful and eventually I put the
Norton cd in the post and sent it to Norton telling them that they could do
what they liked with it as it was not worth anything to me (I'd lost the
receipt so getting a refund would have ben even more hassle).
AVG has been ok for me over the last 2 years, as it has been for a couple of
friends. Of 5 people I know who had a virus, 2 had Norton and had not got
around to using it properly, 3 had no AV. Fortunatetely I'm the only user
of my PC, I keep updates regular, run the scan frequently and spot the
slightest blimp in the way the system is working. Plus I have Zonelalarm
free download. Don't have broadband either so I'm not online 24hours day.
I'd imagine myself to be quite low risk.

Cheers
