I'm considering building a PC from the ground up. Can you post your
recommended links/instructions. I want to make as few "learning" errors as
possible.

Forget about the wanking idiots. They get attached to every group.

One thing you have to consider is, how much technical experience do you
have?
You just don't slap a computer together like legos.
You'll need to draw out an idea of what it is you want.
How big and what style of a case?
Will the motherboard fit in that case without modification?
Will sodering be required and just how is your soldering skills anyway?
Ok so you went through the process all the way flawlessly and you want to
plug it in for the first time.
What's that smoke?
Are you prepared to see $2,000 worth of hard work go down the drain?

Think about it.

Dont unwrap all your parts out of the static bags and lay them on a shag
rug before you start.

No doubt you would, if you had a brain to think with.

Hi, do a google search for "building a pc". Some good links will
appear. I stay in a humid country so I don't have to take precautions
about static electricity (there is none), but if you stay in a place
with lots of static, do ground yourself.

Also the red marking side of cable is always the line 1. As for the dc
plugs for the harddisk, cdrom drive, etc, there is only 1 way to fit.

Read the instruction manual of the motherboard, cpu etc.

After fixing up the parts, there is installation of the op. system.
Most op. system cd disk can be booted up. You need to go into the
motherboard bios to set the 1st boot device to cdrom.

Happy fixing.

Don't bother, keep reading 24HH, good advise is available, you'll learn who
to kill-file sooner rather than later!

I did that long ago, and it was not overwhelmingly difficult.
I remember that the choice of the case was important for prosaic reasons
like having a good ventilator that is not too loud, and having room to
install more than one type of motherboard, so that you can change your
mind.

I remember 2 points:
- the memory units (they were called SIMMs then) often have slightly
different frequencies, so it may happen that they dont work together,
i.e. the bios doesnt "accept" them, or even that it accepts them only if
you place them in one sequence as opposed to another.

- when testing some changes in the bios I restarted the thing some 8-10
times in very quick succession: static accumulated on the motherboard
which eventually burned (rather unspectacularly, btw, I would have
expected a much grander event). So give the static time to dissipate
between restarts (one or two will not be a problem, but dont get into
the double digits )

bye
