Just been handed a laptop running winxp home. All of a sudden the IE
browser started opening multiple instances. I've ran AVG and disabled
everything I can find that might be opening it but nothing works. Any
ideas? I'm unfamiliar with winxp since all our system PCs still use
win 98.

Hey Alan,

Are you running a firewall? Installed a spyware removal tool such as Spybot
Search & Destroy at http://www.safer-networking.org/.

Additionally, as of January 16, 2004 Microsoft no longer supports Windows 98
so it would behoove you to remove those workstations from your network. At
the very least Alan, deny them Internet access until you have upgraded else
you leave your network vulnerable to intrusion.

Hijackthis should find the cause.
Post your log file here if you can't figure it out yourself.

Also, make sure the Messenger Service is disabled.

Yes they do. They have extended the support for 98 for a few more years.

Microsoft are continuing to support win 98

We run 30 win 98 machines. If I disconnected them from the net 30
people would be out of work. Not really a viable course of action.

Did that.
I don't like messenger and keep it off anything I have responsibility
for. Unfortunately this is a mobile pc and is primarily the
responsibility of the user so it has all sorts of crap on it.
