I had some issues with my computer and I needed to reinstall xp. It
is very easy with the install disk but to my surprise old files were
still on my new install. All of the files in the program files
folders, and my documents among many others. Since I backed up all
files I wanted to keep, I wanted a clean install. I tried again, this
time the old fasioned way, with a boot disk and the "format c:"
command and it didn't allow me to format my c drive. Things still
dont seem right ie: crashing, slow programs and conflicts where i had
none before. is there any way to do a real clean install?

Sounds like you 'upgraded' your previous installation. If you ran the setup
program for XP from within Windows, it defaults to an Upgrade.

Follow one of these guides if you plan on doing it again:

Yes Mike, when you boot from the cd and follow the screens it will come
to a point asking if you want to delete the old partition, answer yes
(you have to pretty much go through a couple of screens before it
actually lets you because it wants to make sure), after you delete it you
will then just make a new partition, again the screens will walk you
through it. After the partition is made it will then ask if you want to
format it, which you do. Once that is all done then the install process
will go from there. I'm describing this from memory but if you read each
screen carefully you will see what I mean.

When I choose yes to delete the old partition, it tells me that i can
not delete it because there are files on it that are needed for the
instilation process, or something similar...

Are you using an upgrade cd by chance? I wouldn't think it would make a
difference, it should just ask for your Win98 or Me disk during the
install if thats the case. Otherwise visit bootdisk.com or go to another
computer and make boot disk and boot from the floppy you create and fdisk
to remove the partition and then boot from your cd.

If you try to install it after you've booted to Windows, then it won't be
able to partition or format because Windows is still using the system files
on that drive.

You need to boot from the cd. See the links in my first reply to you...

Are you booting to Windows and then trying to run your cd or are you
booting from the cd itself? You must boot from the cd itself. If your not
able to boot from the cd then you need to go into your system bios and
change the boot order to have the cdrom be first.

Get install to delete and reinstate the partition.
