I have just reloaded/updated this program as all of a sudden I can no
longer open emails with attachments. Even if I just click on them, the
program freezes. What am I doing wrong, is there a wrong setting
somewhere in options? Any other email without attachments opens no
problem. Help.

Tools / Options / Security
Uncheck 'Do not allow attachments to be saved....'

But have you thought of looking at your Options now that you have upgraded?
The truth is out there.
