My firewall (sygate) is all of a sudden warning me of port scans every 10
seconds or so.
Before today, i would get maybe 1 or 2 only a week.

Why has the number of scans increased so dramatically? Is there anything to
worry about?

example of one of the scans:

Somebody is scanning your computer.
Your computer's TCP ports:
2493, 4978, 3007, 2486 and 4988 have been scanned from 213.54.216.211.

Thank you

It is normal background "traffic". Turn off the warnings,
and let your firewall get on with it's job.

That IP address is registered to Tiscali Business GmbH whose website
is www.ripe.net, which I remember very well from lots of spammers.
ripe.net does absolutely nothing about spammers, and in fact seems to
host a large majority of spammers. Second only to uu.net. Likely
they're checking your ports to see if they can find a smtp server to
relay from at a non-standard port.... That, or its someone's
computer is trying to find a file-sharing server that was previoiusly
using the ip address you now have....
