Getting error messages at startup on rundll32 and sometimes with the
explorer. I have to press the 'close' button to get any further. The OS is
windiws98. Can someone please help?

If this has just begun recently, you can restore the registry to a
prior good state.
Boot to the Windows startup disk.
At the dos prompt, type
c: hit Enter
cd windows hit Enter
type scanreg /restore hit Enter
