Windows Updates conflicting with HP Deskjet 840C?

Has anyone come across this? My wife uses an HP 840 DeskJet. Her laptop
(Compaq Evo N600c) was recently upgraded to XP professional SP1 over W2K.
The printer worked fine. She was "advised" by her IT dept to set up
automatic download and install of Windows updates. (She works from home, at
some distance from the office). Last week the printer decided to go mad and
just sits there churning out pages with funny symbols on.
We connected the printer to my laptop, (Toshiba Tecra 9000) also with
Windows XP SP1. I have NOT downloaded all the patches - only certain
security-related ones. The printer works fine on my laptop.
Am I safe in assuming that there is one or more updates that is causing this
behaviour?

Thanks

This sounds typical of the drive not being installed correctly, or is the
wrong type. For XP, the XP version of driver is necessary. The standard
driver from 2000 and earlier will not work properly. Before installing the
proper driver, uninstall the older version.

If you go to the HP site, you should be able to get the proper XP driver for
your printer. Also, on the installation disk of XP-Pro, there should be a
base driver that will work.

we've done that - the ONLY thing I didn't do was to uninstall the old
driver - might have a go at that. How do I "uninstall" a driver?
