Saving newsgroup binaries in OE problem

Hi, I've just started having trouble saving binaries from newsgroups. I used
to right click on the pic, click on save and what file to save in and it
would save it ok.

Now though it saves some sort of file but it doesnt seem to know what sort
of file it is, it is fine if i add ".jpg" to the end of the file either
during saving or after in the folder.

I'm using XP, and I seem to remember seeing in this newsgroup something
about this before, was it that the "temp" folder was full and had to be
deleted or something?

Can someone tell me how to fix this, and if it is a folder that needs to be
deleted/emptied, which one?

And why do Microsoft not fix this?

Thanks,
BP.

If someone uses a blank space in a file name everything after the blank space
gets dropped from the file name.

I can't specifically answer your question as I abandoned OE for binaries
downloads almost from the very start. I'd encourage you to do the same
thing. I use the freeware binaries newsreader Xnews, which requires no
install- just put it in a folder somewhere and connect it to your news
server. It makes it all seem so very easy compared to OE.

Ian.

Using OE for newsgroup binaries is stupid.

I know it's not the best but I like the way in OE i can click on loads of
messages and they'll all come down.

I use Xnews but I cant find out how to do a similar thing, I think it is
something to do with queueing the messages, I queue them up but nothing
seems to happen. If OE is no good can someone tell me how to do this in
Xnews please.

I have read the help page but still cant work it out.....DOH!!

No only is it (OE) not the best, it is *the* worst!

If you are interested in binaries in particular, you should use
something like Newsbin for binaries, and continue with
your preferred reader for text groups.
http://www.newsbin.com/

Short of that, press CTRL+SPACE to queue all articles in Xnews.
Right click on the articles and you will see the shortcuts.

The help pages aren't overly helpful at all, are they? My smarter younger
brother told me how to download files with Xnews and made it sound as simple
as it actually is, no thanks to the help file.

Load up your binaries newsgroup of choice. Wait for the "Ready" indicator
in the lower-right panel. Groups with lots of material might take a while
for all the headers to download- wait for the "ready" indication.

I'll give an example of downloading a single mp3 file here, but the same
applies to downloading parts of rar files in the software and movies groups:
The mp3 files with a complete blue square icon next to them on the left are
complete files. Find one you want, and have a look at the headings on the
top there- right next to the song you want to download, click under the "Q"
column. It just showed a number "1" next to that file, right? Now look at
the bottom of the screen and click on that block-shaped icon ("DecodeF4.")
This takes you to your designated download folder, which is within the Xnews
install folder by default. Click the "Decode" button. You'll see the
progress bar running along in red in the lower-right pane. Xnews did the
combining when you went into the newsgroup, and now it's just doing the
decoding. At some point it'll indicate "1 file decoded." Go to the
Downloads folder where you've installed Xnews and presto! There's your
song!

HTH,
Ian.
(Now Playing: "I'm In The Mood For Love" - Ray Price; which I downloaded
while describing this procedure to you.)

Select the images in X-News and choose Decode instead of Queue.
