puter freezes on logon dialogue box?

What would cause 'puter to "freeze up" when booting up? This happens when
dialogue box calls for a "logon" password. (have different users/password on
this puter at home)

Am running win '98se.

It's possible that you have a damaged password list (.pwl) file.
Try deleting it and reboot.

I can't get far enough to be able to password in.
Would taking the battery out then re-install help?

Boot into DOS and delete the password list.
