Default Installing New Hard Drive

Hi:

I just purchased an 80gb Western Digital HD with 8mb cache and would like to
know the proper steps in installing it. The retailer told me I have to
format it and fdisk it.

I will be running win98 and was told to boot up off the win98 start up disk
which I have. I was also told that win98 cannot recognize any HD bigger
than 32 gb so I will need to partition it into 3 drives I suppose.

Can anyone tell me or refer me to a site that can help me properly do this
step by step without problems. I was told I can partition the drive off the
start up disk as well.

Thanks

JDM

This is wrong. Win98 can handle up to a 128G HD - HOWEVER, the
version of FDISK that comes with it wraps the display at 64G. So a 80G
drive will look like it's actually something like 12G.

Is this the new master drive? Or a secondary drive?

This is a new drive, master. It is replacing the crappy Fujitsu drive I
had which crashed. I am using my fiancee's computer in the meantime.

I just did some research and yes, bigger than 64gb drives are not recognized
so, it will show a capacity of 16gb. I found out off the following website
http://support.wdc.com/download/#dlgtools that if i download Data Lifeguard
version 10, that no fixes will be reguired to remedy the incapacity of
recognizing the 80 gb HD.

Hello,
First. Windows 98 CAN recognize and use large hard drives. So there is no
need to partition
the drive unless it is your desire to do so.
Second. The limiting factor is your BIOS. If the machine is an older one,
the BIOS may not support
large hard drives. In order to find out, open the case, or read the user
manual, for the model number
and manufacturer, go to their web site, look up the board and read. If you
must flash the BIOS to
upgrade it to support large hard drives, the manufacturer will have the
software for download.
If you choose to do a flash, read the instructions VERY carefully and follow
the steps exactly to
the letter.
Or, you can install the drive, boot into the BIOS and see if it was
automatically detected. If it was,
Save and exit the BIOS.
Place the Windows 98 Start up diskette in the A:\ drive and when it boots
choose no CD-ROM support.
Type Fdisk and hit enter
Look at choice 4. It should show the hard disk with no partitions.
Create a primary partition and format it FAT32.
reboot as required.
If you would like to create other logical partitions, now is the time to do
so.

Once it is formatted. Place the Windows 98 CD-ROM into the drive.
Boot the system with the Windows 98 Start up diskette and THIS time choose
"Yes" to boot
with CD-ROM support.
Note: your drive letters will change as the boot diskette creates a logical
drive, usually D:\.
so your CD-ROM drive letter which was D:\ will become E:\......two CD-ROM's
same concept.

Or, type CD E: and see what it does. It is a valid drive letter type DIR
<enter>
When you find the Windows 98 CD-ROM and have typed DIR <enter> locate
setup.exe
Type Setup <enter> and the install will begin!
Have Fun!

Two things - one, it IS recognized. Two, that's because FDISK wraps
at 64G. BTW - you won't see 16G, but more like 11 ...

(If it didn't recognize the 80G, you wouldn't see the remainder of
the wrap, now, would you?)

It would seem you are right. I have a 120 gig and a 60 gig running Windows 98
and fdisk shows thus;

Disk Drv Mbytes Free Usage
1 48935 100%
C: 48935
2 57239 100%
D: 1961
E: 55278

My bios is limited to 32 gigs so I am using an overlay for both.
