Empty floppy drive starts up by itself.

I'm still trying to figure out what makes the 3.5" floppy on my Win98
Dell machine attempt to access its empty floppy drive at ten minutes to
the hour, even when I'm not at the keyboard or conciously running any
programs. I'm not certain if it's *every hour*, but when I hear it and
glance at my watch it's always "ten to something".

I've done full system scans with Norton Antivirus 2003 and Ad-aware 6.0
which don't report anything awry. The Norton AV is *not* set up to do
scheduled checks of anything, at least according to its setup screens.

This "poltergeist" appeared by itself a few weeks ago. I can't remember
anything I might have don to encourage its arrival.

Ideas on how to locate what's making this happen, and stopping it, short
of using the "rebuild CD" and starting all over will be most
appreciated.

Jeff

Have you checked to see if system cleanup is set to run automatically?

Just a thought, but look at this website

http://www.rjlsoftware.com/software/...inment/floppy/

I've looked round this entire site, I can't believe anyone would write or
distribute stuff like this, but there you go. (Apart from anything else,
it's *not funny* Maybe nothing to do with your problem, but might worth a
look.

Something in your Recent Documents list may be trying to access it, clear
this list. Also if you use MS Office disable Find Fast.

Not sure if it's exactly the same for 98 as for 2000, but take a look at Start |
Search | Files and Folders, and see if there is an option for Fast Find
(Indexing Service for 2000) and turn it off.
