I've seen some crazy rates in Minnesota too. Not as bad as this one though.
Last one I saw was for a full-time web developer and they wanted to pay
$23,000 per year. They were looking for someone with experience in html,
xhtml, asp, sql, server security and some other stuff. I think they're
hoping to hire the desperate and lower the market value.

And they probably find people to fill these jobs

I know a few web designers who would take a minimum wage job because they
went to some school, learned web design and now want to use those skills....
BUT, they've already done all the websites they can for friends and family
members and don't know how to find jobs leads or advertise their services
other than slap together a portfolio page.

As long as there are web designers who don't realise that web design is 80%
sales and only 20% design, there will be people willing to take these jobs

I think minimum wage is still under £5/hour, but yes, it is pretty close.

That's just who'll take this job, and this company will get what they pay for.

With all due respect, there are hobbyist authors who have more skill and
ability than many professionals. Some of them post here.

Oh I agree with that, but I'm talking about active professionals.

I know of a few people who could make a decent living at this if they wanted to
ditch their hobby sites.
