obviously you have given up all hope of *not* having to pay the 80
dollars...because this rant should be directed at godaddy, not at people who
are just going to tell you you're wrong. clearly you're involved in a
situation that somehow requires a payment of $80. since no one else knows
the specifics, or even the domain you're renewing, it's hard for us to judge
whether what godaddy is doing is "fair" or not.
given the situation, if i were the domain registrar, even i would find it
rather ridiculous to charge people $80 for a domain renewal within the
retention period. this would **** customers off, as we can clearly see, and
not many would stay with godaddy. you can transfer your domain at any time,
seeing as how *you* are the owner, not godaddy.
like i said, we can't tell what the exact situation is here, but i'm
positive you don't have to pay the $80 unless you want to stay with godaddy.
(unless there's some disclaimer in their TOS that can force you to pay if
you break some rule or do something wrong...) you should be able to transfer
the domain and in doing this, you will only be paying the new registrar. if
you want a good one, check out 1and1 (
www.1and1.com)... $6 for a year, no
setup fees or anything like that.
