Updates for Firefox and Thunderbird

All:
I have set both Firefox 1.5 and Thunderbird 1.5 so that they
automatically update under both Windows and Linux. They do so under
Windows but not under Mandrake Linux 10.2 (Mandriva Linux 2005). What is
it that doesn't allow updates under Linux?

Hard to say what's going on from that limited info. So let's guess the
most likely point of failure: file protection problems. For instance,
apps were installed with "root" ownership and you tried to update from a
different account. Seems like the most obvious candidate since it's not
a great idea to run Gnome or KDE as root, yet at least Firefox must be
running as root for the update to work.

You'll probably find that it's a "permissions" issue - Linux doesn't
generally allow installation of software without root privilege! In the
Windows world, everyone is an "administrator" by default, so software just
installs itself - hence all the virus, trojan and other malware.

I never did like the update feature. Sometimes you have to wait a
week or two before anything happens. Any ways, you can always
download from the source:

for TB: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.or...bird/releases/
for FF: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/

Depends -- are you using an RPM version of them or the official versions
from Mozilla? Any RPM version likely won't match the signature of the
official version (Mandriva's versions included with 2006 don't, 2005 was
probably the same), so the Mozilla site won't provide updates to them.

I have FF and Thunderbird installed in my home dir and the updates work
just fine without root previliges.

Why would anyone in their right mind want an auto update to install on their
computer? I can see windblows allowing it. Hell they allow everything to
invade the box. I would advise against any auto update on any OS.

That's because you installed them only for your user, not for the whole
system. No-one else who uses your system with their own log-in will be
able to see or use your Firefox or Thunderbird (unless you have set the
permissions to let them share your personal installation).

My experience is completely opposite; Firefox on Windows never prompted
me for program update(I found out about it from web news) and I had to
check for extensions updates individually, whereas on Linux it was all
done in one fell swoop and what's more it only needed to download and
apply internally a small(~600kB) update to bring it up to 1.5.0.2,
opposed to the full Windows installer download. I've always run
Firefox/Thunderbird from a tarball unpacked to home dir and it's been a
breeze(except for themes and extensions that keep getting disabled for
incompatibility with every new Firefox release).
