The code seems to need enabled javascript in the browser.
is there also a way to do this without javascript?
(or at least, with a browser that is not necessarily set to
javascript enabled, so that it works for any setting?)

Don't think it works with Javascript disabled (the code eventually uses the Javascript engine of the
browser), but just give it a try (it's easy to test).
