one potential solution for XP users who are finding JFileChooser slow
to load...

[Taken from another forum regarding stopping XP viewing contents of
ZIP files]

1) Run regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll
2) restart machine
3) open winzip
4) respond ‘yes' to question about making full association


this decreased my 60 second time to open a folder with 3 small text
files down to sub-second time.
