When writing and email and i type in the contact name in in the "TO"
field or the "CC" field then Thunderbird comes to a halt and does not
respond for over 10 minutes. Checking with the task manager, I can see
that Thunderbird is using 96+% of the processor time, this does not
sound right and it should not be happening. I have 6 separate address
books which i have imported from various email accounts and the total
number of addresses is around 200. I expect Thunderbird is trying to
find a match in the address books, but it should not take such a high
percentage of the processor load and make the PC grind to a halt for in
excess of 10 minutes. i\It should be noted that the default is the
personal address book and that this one only has around 20 of the most
used email addresses

is there a setting or a way to configure thunderbird so i can get better
performance

thanks in advance Anthony

If the problem goes away when Thunderbird is run in safe mode, it could
be the fault of an extension you installed.

What is your OS, CPU speed and amount of RAM?
