Firefox has "English ( British )" in addition to "English ( US )"
( although released weeks later than the US version... )

whereas Thunderbird doesn't have any UK-specific version at all...

well... rather than whinge about it
it would be better to offer to help

so, how can a user help produce
local language versions of Firefox and Thunderbird ?

{
notice the British spelling of is
as opposed to the American spelling - which is
}

Have you seen this webpage ? http://www.mozilla.org/projects/l10n/
That is the home of Mozilla localisation projects.

If you follow the link for Thunderbird it seems that the last official
en-GB release was 0.6, but the British localisers offer an unofficial
language pack for Thunderbird 1.0 at their homepage.

The Locale Switcher extension allows you to avoid the command line
tricks. (http://benjamin.smedbergs.us/switch-locales/)
