In Firefox? In Thunderbird? Doesnt really matter I suppose, I know of no method to recover from a lost or forgotten master password. Looks like you are going to have to start all over again with a new profile. Hey, you were warned <g> > Thunderbird does have a Reset button for master Password. Note that using it causes the loss of all stored passwords, but it beats migrating to a new profile. Mozilla also has the same feature. That leads me to think there must be a way to do it in about:config, but I don't know what it is. Before looking further, we need an answer to the question of which app we are talking about. Lee |

depending on your system, what sunil said might work. the best bet is to execute thunderbird from the command line.
if you're in windows: 1) find the path to your thunderbird.exe file by right clicking on your shortcut and clicking on properties. it should look something like "C:\Program Files\...\thunderbird.exe" 2) if the quotes aren't there, you'll want to add them for this next part. you'll want to select run from the windows menu and type/paste in your path with the quotes surrounding it. 3) after that, you add the following at the end (within the quotes) -chrome chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul which should give you something like "C:\path to thunderbird\thunderbird.ext -chrome chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul" 4) run that and you should reset the master password. <hr /> for fledgling unix users (such as myself): 1) do a which to confirm that you can run thunderbird from commandline should look like: your prompt% which mozilla-thunderbird /usr/bin/mozilla-thunderbird 2) after that, execute the binary with the same flag as windows -chrome chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul <hr /> for mac users: 1) um...yeah. I'll have to do testing on how to run thunderbird from the command line. I tried it on my mac but haven't found a way yet. |

for windows and *nix users
you can definately reset the password by adding the following switch in the command line: -chrome chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul windows users, use run to execute it. looks something like (with the quotes): "C:\path to thunderbird\thunderbird.exe -chrome chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul" *nix users (while in terminal): mozilla-thunderbird -chrome chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul |

One way of removing the master password that seemed to work is to remove the key3.db file from the profile:
C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\<blurb>.default/key3.db I was then asked for a new master password, and everything seems to work ok. As to the possibility of breaking anything else, I couldn't possibly comment. It would almost certainly remove any stored passwords. Note: The thunderbird -chrome .... option mentioned earlier didn't work for me. Maybe this thread is out of date. |
