Clonezilla is a free cloning program that works great. If you are
trying to apply an image from one computer to a computer with
different hardware you are going to run into problems, because of
driver issues however unless you add the needed drivers for the new
system and sysprep the image. It might be easier for you depending on
your level of expertise to just back up Documents and Settings and
then reinstalling your old programs on the new system.

I hope you meant USB external hard drive. A flash drive isn't going to be
sufficient nor should you use CD/DVD/B.Ray drive because they are prone to
fail during writing process.
