Major bug with Nero Xpress
 

Hi folks,

I have a copy of Nero Video Xpress, which I received along with
the rest of Nero's utilities during a DVD drive upgrade, and
I want to report to you all a major bug in Xpress.

I created a wide-screen 720x480 video, encoded it using
TMPGEnc, and authored the DVD itself using Nero Video Xpress.

When played the DVD on my computer (I haven't owned a TV
in over 10 years), it played as wide-screen. I thought great,
the DVD is fine.

Little did I know it wasn't!

When I later viewed the DVD on two different DVD players
of friends playing on regular TVs, the video content was cut off
on the left and right, i.e. it was not wide-screen.

During the Nero Xpress authoring, no warning was issued
that this would happen and the resolution was confirmed as
being 720x480 NTSC.

So, FYI, Nero Xpress has a major bug.

Are you sure the tv's were set-up properly? Most people have the weirdest
set-ups with long people or fat people, you name it. Anything to get rid of
the black bars left/right/top/bottom ;-)

First I'd check the DVD player's setting to make sure it is set
correctly for display mode and ratio. Try setting it to 16x9 mode and
see if it shows the whole image (may be squashed on 4:3 TV)

Nero software is just loaded with problems, especially in their video
editing and playback software. I have written to them numerous times, had a
few really lame replies, and downloaded and installed numerous updates and
bug fixes, most of which take forever to install and produce few if any
benefits. The HD DVDs and BluRay disks it makes look just plain awful.

My own opinion is to buy it for the burner software, and don't expect much
from the rest of the package.

I believe it.

If it were possible for me to make my own VOB files and other
required files using entirely other software, I would.
I've just learned that AviDeMux can write VOB. That's a start.

You can.
There are lots of DVD Authoring programs out there.
Once you've encoded your video with TMPGEnc, import the resulting
files into DVD Lab Pro 2 (www.mediachance.com) and you can create a
menu, chapter points and whatever else you want...

Yes, some Nero software is buggy, and so are the built-in uninstallers...
So, don't(!) use Add or Remove Programs to uninstall Nero stuff which can
crash the op system, kill access to the DVD drive(s), etc. Go to their
website and get the Nero cleaner tool appropriate for your particular
version. That's the safest way, especially if you have their InCD installed.
