Dial up error 676

I did a winxp recovery on a Packard Bell and now I get the
modem reporting "Error 676 The phone line is busy"
I've tried everything I could find on Google, the settings
look fine to me and the line works with a telephone ok.
Is there anything I might be missing?

1) Your phone has been cut off due to non-payment
2) You have a stuffed Modem Cable
3) You have call minder and you have a message
4) You've plugged your modem cable into the phone plug instead of line on
the modem

Can tested via plugging in a phone via the modem cable and see if you have a
proper dialtone

Or (most likely) maybe just software problem. Got into Control Panel..
remove
modem from device manager and make it re find it again and see if it works.

Thanks
Craig

I've seen number 3 happen a few times. Mildly amusing.

I re-installed winxp home via recovery again and dial up decided to
work ok.
I upgraded to winxp pro and back comes Error 676!
Changed the modem cable, no call minder, only one hole
on the modem and I don't know.

You upgraded to Pro? from Home? This is not posible really
Or was the Pro install a fresh new install? and you are using
the built in drivers for XP for the modem? Goto the website
of your computer and download the drivers which are specific
for your Modem and try those.. Seems like the drivers which
XP Pro is using for the Modem is not 100% compatible with it

Thanks
Craig

That was it, Craig, thankyou very much.
I was able to roll back the driver to the previous one in the
Control panel and all is well. :)

Why isn't it possible? It is according to Microsoft
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...ng/matrix.mspx
