heh, I can't see any comment from MS either way... so whos to say that
this wasn't a hoax message stating it was a hoax?

While this just goes to prove you can't trust anything you read, the
same goes for the blog entry: how do we know the blog entry is the
truth?

Nice try Dave. Ed Bott's been blogging for quite a while and has a lot more
cred than the formerly unheard-of business site Mutley etc were quoting
from.

they both have the same "cred" in my opinion... I'd never heard of
either of them.

Google seems to know more about Ed Bott though, although Google also
knows a lot about penis enlargement and herbal viagra... draw your own
conclusions.

I didn't actually comment on the story (because well yawn), but Paul
Thurrott's Windows IT Pro newsletter was where I first heard about it (as
that blog post mentioned).

It didn't jump out at me as a hoax because a) companies have tried to
pull **** like that in the past and b) PT usually has pretty good info on
what MS is up to. I hadn't heard of the edbot before either.

I notice you weren't exactly jumping in to say it was obviously a hoax,
and seeing as though you had obviously read through the aforementioned
circle jerk, I assume you were taken in by the hoax too?

Taken in ? What's to be "taken in" by ? Mutley et al were all going off the
deep end about the supposed evils of something that was nothing more than a
21st century version of a movie ticket. It was pathetic to watch a
self-righteous frenzy fuelled solely by the identity of the alleged
perpetrator i.e. MS. If this had been a Google or Apple announcement it
would have treated completely differently. Personally I think it's not a bad
idea and I wouldn't mind paying a reasonable sum for the right to watch a
DVD movie just one time. Thinking about it a bit I would estimate that I'd
only watch 1 in 10 movies more than once anyway.

Cue angry denials, corrections, retractions and anti-MS bile from the usual
suspects.
