The only good thing about installing it was that I have learnt a heap about Mandrake while reading through all sorts of things. All up I have spent 11 hours this weekend on LindowsOS3 and have not installed anything, Have not changed anything from the default install and seen every error message that it can possibly display. It has done it's dash with me. Moving on to Mandrake 9.1 when it finishes downloading. -- "It's what you learn after you know it all that counts." |

From the printout, it looks like a Linux or Unix, but these normally come with gcc installed by default. Certainly, that is the case with Mandrake 9.1 which I'm using here. Also, installing new packages is easy using urpmi or the Mdk control centre, as it gets any required dependencies. (I understand Debian has a similar feature called apt.) Maybe some specialist distros have a more manual-matic approach. If you are using one of these, you might be better off getting advice from a specialist newsgroup or mailing list. HTH Peter |

The key thing with Mandrake is whether your hardware manufacturer supports or enables Linux. More and more do these days. Be sure to get all 3 isos of MDK9.1, there is some useful stuff on each of the CDs. If you have any questions, use groups.google.com to search alt.os.linux.mandrake - some of the folks there are very clued up. Also, check PLF for extra software packages (and an easy way to set up urpmi) http://plf.zarb.org/ good luck Peter |

I really think 99.9% of the problem was Lindows itself. -- "It's what you learn after you know it all that counts." |
