Is there a way to have my machine report it's IP address after it reboots?
Is there a way to have my machine report it's IP address after it
reboots? I've been to LAN parties where I need to hook up a monitor, keyboard and mouse to my server because someone popped the breaker it's on. Sometimes the server returns to the same IP address, sometimes not. The computer restarts but I need to make sure the servers are running. I thought maybe something like Xfire IM would let me do it, but I can't seem to figure out how. A friend once told me he accomplished it because Comcast changed the IP his server used often. Thanks in advance Bill :) |

Change the server to have a static ip address. in the network properties or find the mac address and do it at the router which may be a better idea |

Now you say. Although 'report it's IP address' to where is another issue. >I don't want to hook up a keyboard mouse and monitor. The server runs >attached to the backbone of the LAN headless. Put a sticker on your server with the MAC address. Wander over to the server / router and look at the DHCP lease / arp table. This avoids having to know the OS or where to send / view remotely on whatever. Me |

For DynDNS, for example, I suggest that you use their client that runs on the host to which you want to connect even if behind a NAT router. Some NAT routers include support for DynDNS except that they often do not report an IP address change to the DynDNS server unless there is a change in the IP address but that could be months away but a free DynDNS definition expires after a month or two. |
