Power outage while using Partition Magic 8.0 has left disc marked 'BAD'
While I was extending a partition on my second hard drive there was a power
outage. Now the drive no longer shows in Explorer and Disc Management shows the drive as Online but will not allow me to allocate a driver letter. Partition Magic shows the drive as bad and only offers the option to format it. The Partition Info Tool gives the report below. I will be really glad of some help on how to put his right and yes I know the data should have been backed up! Error #109: Partition ends after end of disk. ucEndCylinder (48641) must be less than 48641. Info: End C,H,S values were large drive placeholders. Actual values are: 0 0 80 0 0 3 3C 48641 80 53 2 781422756 Info: Partition didn't begin on head boundary. ucBeginSector expected to be 1, not 3. Error #109: Partition ends after end of disk. ucEndCylinder (48641) must be less than 48641. Info: Partition didn't end on cylinder boundary. ucEndHead expected to be 254, not 80. Info: Partition didn't end on cylinder boundary. ucEndSector expected to be 63, not 53. |

As I have NO experience with PM, preferring to work with this stuff in DOS, I can not comment on Pennywise's suggestion. In any event, repartitioning or doing equally major operations without using an UPS is just reckless at best. -- "This is not nuclear. This is just a test." - illyria |

Need more space, dump a disk in another PC and create partitions, copy data, leave original unused for 3 weeks. When it's all backed up from new disk, have another disk to reuse. >the drive as Online but will not allow me to allocate a driver letter. >Partition Magic shows the drive as bad and only offers the option to format >it. The blurb in the FAQ says the PM8.0 CD is bootable, that should help, may get around any error while WIn is running. At this point, buy another HD and an image utility, try making an image of current disk, if possible with the error. At least if further problems you may be able to start again or throw a data recovery app like GetDataBack, see below, at the copy. >The Partition Info Tool gives the report below. If PartitionMagic does not automatically fix these errors, a sure way to resolve these errors it to do the following: 1 Back up all the data that is in the defective partitions. 2 Delete the defective partitions. 3 Create new partitions. 4 Restore all your data to the new partitions. <snip> Document ID: 2004061486839062 Last Modified: 11/01/2006 Date Created: 04/13/2004 Operating System(s): Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows Me, Windows XP Home, Windows XP Pro, Windows 2000, MS-DOS Product(s): Norton PartitionMagic 8.0, PartitionMagic 8.0 Depending on OS, FAT or NTFS version of GetDataBack www.runtime.org Me |

You should be using an UPS solution and have your machine or machines
plugged into it for the very reason of a power outage. The UPS would have kicked in with its battery and supplied the needed power for awhile when the power was lost or interrupted. |

I had massive data corruption, and even though using a recovery program appeared to have saved most of it, it was all jumbled. For instance, an MP3 appeared intact, but when you played it, it was three or four different songs all jumbled together. Live and learn - never do partitioning operations without a UPS. -- A: Because it disturbs the logical flow of the message. Q: Why is top posting frowned upon? |
