Cookies as spyware? (long - includes scan log)
I have had a Blue Screen of Death twice in the past four days on my XP
computer. The computer has all the Windows updates, gets virus and spyware checked twice per week, always comes up clean. And I've never had a virus issue with a computer, and the few spyware issues were my own fault and I immediately knew that I'd introduced spyware. So I'm pretty good at computing safely. Doing some investigation into my BSOD (the first two error codes were 0x000000F4 and 0x00000003), I saw some recommendations that I run pandaware on my computer. I did, and the pandaware found 89 "spyware" instances. But it turned out that these were all cookies. Now I know that cookies can track my web behavior, and I have my browsers (mainly Firefox) set to block cookies from most of the advertising sites, but I'm wondering now if cookies really can be malicious spyware. Can cookies in themselves hijack my processor, launch unwanted programs, that kind of stuff? Although it's a long thing, I am going to post the pandaware log here, just in hopes that someone might comment on it. I'd also welcome comments on the four viruses that were found in the scan: Virus:W32/Alcan.A.worm Disinfected C:\Program Files\winupdates\a.tmp Virus:W32/Alcan.A.worm Disinfected C:\Program Files\winupdates\a.zip[Setup.exe] Virus:W32/Imagrayd.A.wom Disinfected D:\My Documents\zzzMusic\George Winston - Forest (Piano Solo).zip[Setup.exe] Virus:Bck/CrackBox Disinfected D:\My No, they cannot attack the machine. Cookies hold small amounts of text information about your browser session with a Website. That's it and nothing else. Cookies are not executable files, therefore, they cannot be execute, cannot execute anything and they cannot attack the machine. All the cookie crap as part of some kind of malware scheme is totally ridiculous and if you have software on your machine executing to take out *cookies* you have snake-oil running on the machine. I'd suggest you go through your cookies and remove Panda eferences. However, the fact that both of your BSODs involve mention of Panda makes me suspicious, and I would definitely be checking for some sort of infestation. |
