Some new IOS commands override BGP's default behavior
in selecting a single best route. In my case I need
to load-balance eBGP routes to multiple desinations for
redundancy & failover. IOS commands are:
- maximum-paths X - this is a global command.
There's a command to load-balance (Cisco's words) unequal cost links:
- bgp dmzlink-bw
Has anyone used these in production? I'm looking for
any gotchas or caveats.
Re: BGP load-sharing
To use either of these you will need to enable BGP multipath. That I
have had expereience with and it was a scrotum tightening moment.
Resource intensive is not the word. I sat in horror is the console
went into outer space... it was some 5-8 minutes before I got the
prompt back and could clear the sessions. Eh... emergency situs make
maniacs of us all. If you have a chance to model this on non-prod
gear, I would wholeheartedly recommend it.
The 'multipath' command should be applied on both to achieve proper routing. If you are applying it to ISP link, forget it. ISP doesn't support in thousands of reasons they said.
