Validating a working handheld barcode scanner
 

I have a client who is in need of a way to verify a hand held barcode
scanner is working at the beginning of a shift and at the end of a
shift, and log the user with a time stamp.

The scanner is attached by serial connection to XP Pro.

The user does not have a windows login, but does login to a proprietary
app once they select there virtual keyboard layout.

Windows logins are not an option and we will not have administrative
access.
