U-Tech Media, the largest producer of pre-recorded discs in Taiwan, is
preparing to produce, both HD-DVD and Blu-ray movie discs, with volume
production to begin in the first half of next year, according to the
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment recently stated that it has completed
production of the world’s first Blu-ray pre-recorded movie “Charlie’s
Angels: Full Throttle,” with the movie disc to be launched next month.
U-Tech cooperates with the Opto-Electronics & Systems Laboratories
under the government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research
Institute (ITRI) in developing HD-DVD pre-recording technology and has
acquired related technology from the US, the company indicated. For
the Blu-ray format, U-Tech will be technologically supported by its
parent company Ritek, Taiwan’s second largest maker of blank optical
discs, U-Tech noted.
In related news, Lite-On IT plans to offer blue-laser DVD players in
the third quarter of 2006, according to general manager Michael Gong
for the company’s Optical Disc Drive Business. BenQ, with technology
mainly from Philips, plans to start volume production of Blu-ray ROM
drives in the second quarter of 2006, the company indicated.
