Laptop speakers

Have I just been unlucky or are laptop speakers know to perform badly? I
have an ASUS A3L and to listen to a DVD needs the volume full up and I can
still barely hear it.

check the system audio properties.. not just the player audio settings.

Check all the volumes everywhere.
Laptop speakers can be a little quiet, winamp can be useful, the equaliser
allows you to boost the sound of a quiet source, like having a volume that
goes up to 11....
