Binaries?

Every once in a while I see a reference to the fact that this is not a
binaries group. Please educate me on this matter. I hate to stay
completely ignorant.

Re: Binaries?

Binaries are files... graphics, html, music, video, etc. This news group is
a text only group. Please adhere to text only.

Binary groups handle the other stuff. They often begin with alt. Check your
server for such news groups.

Re: Binaries?

I've seen alt in the list of newsgroups but never knew the significance.
Thanks

Re: Binaries?

"alt" doesn not mean binary. It only mean "alt".

All those starting by "alt.binaries" are binary. :)

"alt" really doesn't have any significance in terms of binaries. Most
binary newsgroups will begin with "alt.binary" or "alt.binaries". If it
doesn't, a good rule of thumb is that it is *not* OK to post files
(attachments of any sort) unless requested to do so (say we need a
screenshot to help you....this request is pretty rare, but it does happen
from time to time)

Anyone requesting someone post a binary file here is
as idiotic as the people posting them. This is NOT a
binaries group. Binaries do NOT belong here, period.

Agreed, but I've seen it done in this group, as well as other non-binaries.
A link to the appropriate screenshot is much better.
